and then there were three…just one week shy of the live finale, the final contestants (casey james, crystal bowersox and lee dewyze) take the stage not once, but twice to try to woo your votes. so how did they fare?
let’s start with casey james. he sang “okay, it’s alright with me” by eric hutchison. and…it put the judges to sleep. casey is definitely the underdog here. it’s obvious, america wants a crystal-lee showdown and casey is blatantly in the way.
randy: that song was alright with me. i wanted to hear something more from you.
ellen: this is the moment. it’s like live or die… felt the same way. i wish you had brought it.
kara: that didn’t work in your favor.
simon: it is arguably the most important night of your life. you are lucky you have two song choices.
next came crystal with her choice of song: “come to my window” by melissa etheridge. i actually really liked it. i think crystal did a decent job.
randy: i did not love the arrangement. what i did like though is i loved your vocal on it.
ellen: it was a good song choice. it’s the artist you want to be. melissa would be very proud of you.
kara: i agree with the guys.
simon: this isn’t the most stunning version. what i like about you, from the first day to now in the semifinal, you haven’t compromised yourself as an artist.
and last but not least, lee performed “simple man” by lynyrd skynyrd, as the song he chose for himself. and it was good to actually see lee smile, like a real genuine smile. hands-down, first round went to lee. well so did second, but we’re not there yet.
randy: great great song choice. i can see you making a record like this. somebody is feeling they can win this, lee…
ellen: you took this thing seriously.
kara: you showed us everything you’ve got. round one goes to lee. (ditto)
simon: it was absolutely on the money. you just crushed the other two.
next were the judges’ choice songs. randy and kara chose “daughters” by john mayer for casey. and? honestly, if i wasn’t sleeping the first time around, this one knocked me out. they told casey they liked it better than his first one. well, that’s not hard considering song one was horrid.
randy: this fit you like a glove.
ellen: there will be a lot of mothers and daughters and sons voting for you.
kara: this shows the more artistic side.
simon: it was a much much better song choice than the first one. the only issue it was a bit of a lazy arrangement. the climax is a limp guitar solo.
notice, no one was blown away?
ellen chose “maybe, i’m amazed” by paul mccartney for crystal. how was it? it was pretty good. and she even put her guitar down. and sounded really good. she looked comfortable and she looked great.
randy: great song, great vocals and somebody else in it to win it.
ellen: i couldn’t have asked for more.
kara: you didn’t change it up that much but what you did is show parts of your voice we haven’t heard before. you really pushed.
simon: when i heard the song choice, i was surprised, but that showed you have soul.

and the real showstopper? simon’s pick for for lee. “hallelujah,” america bow down to your new idol. with a backup choir, i’m not going to lie. i got chills. now, i understand why lee gets so teary-eyed. the song has been done a million times on idol, and it actually almost always reminds me of ryan and marissa on the oc, but seriously, lee blew that one out of the water and earned himself the idol crown.
randy: dude. i gotta give it up to my boy. he set you up. this was your biggest moment. that was unbelievable.
ellen: stunning.
kara: you are what the show is about. you are the heart of this show. you just owned the entire night. (he certainly did.)
simon: i’m very very very proud of you. you are a fantastic singer and great person
seriously, if it’s not a crystal-lee finale, i may just have to throw a hissy fit. so kids, don’t forget to vote!
